Nia Dewan crowned Miss UK Nepal 2014

Miss Nia Dewan was crowned as the winner of Miss UK Nepal 2014, which was held on 31 August at Princess Hall, Aldershot. Her fellow runner ups are Miss Sumi Shrestha and Miss Arya Sharma respectively.

Nepal wins ACC-U16 Premier in Malaysia

Nepal’s Under-16 cricket team has claimed the title of ACC-U16 champions after beating Malaysia by 32 runs. The match was held in Kuala Lumpur, where Nepal were the first to bat and attained 161 runs for 9 off 40 overs and Malaysia attained 129 runs (all out for 36.2 overs).

This win is Nepal’s first in the U16 category.  It has been announced that The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) will be rewarding Rs. 20,000 to each player for their effort in gaining victory.


Landslide in Mankha

More than 150 people are feared dead when a landslide struck in Mankha, 140 km east of Kathmandu. The disaster has left the police confirming 10 dead and it has been advised that there is a very little hope of rescue efforts being successful as a huge pile of debris has made the effort impossible to be implied immediately.

Local villagers and the Nepali army have been working together to clear the debris, find survivors and clear the blockage in Sunkoshi river created by the landslide, which threatens to drown the habitable land of Mankha.


Chinese railway to build links to Nepal border

Chinese government has published plans to extend their railway link from Sigaste of Tibet to borders of Nepal, India and Bhutan.


The proposed plan is set to commence in 2016 and set be completed in 2020. On completion, the railway will link Kerung border area of Nepal. This will help increase the trade between the two countries, and possibly make Nepal less dependent on India for its import and export.

Nepali Cricket Team gets T20i Status

Nepalese Cricket team has gained T20i status on 28 June 2014 – which means Nepal will get opportunities to play against big teams further down the road. Nepalese team demonstrated their skills last year in ICC world cup by beating Hong Kong and Afghanistan, while narrowly losing out to Bangladesh for advancement to the second stage of the tournament.

The  rewarded status for Nepal is valid until 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier. Huge congratulations to the team and well done to their efforts.


Prabal Gurung in London

Nepalese-American fashion designer Prabal Gurung is in London attending The Serpentine Summer party (July 01, 2014). The Singapore born designer was with his “date”, English actress Gemma Arterton who was wearing one of his designs.

Nepali Citizenship for Veteran John Cross

Now, here is an interesting piece of news. World War II veteran John Philips Cross, who is 90 years old, has been fighting to become a Nepali Citizen. Well, we all know how hard it is for even general Nepalis to go through the process – so we can imagine, sigh. If we remember it right, his case was highlighted in medias a few years back as well.
